About the Event
Northwest Vista College (NVC) welcomes San Antonio Poet Laureate Eddie Vega on Thursday, March 20. Vega will participate as a judge in a student poetry contest, share his expertise in a writing workshop, and deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. in the Palmetto Center for the Arts on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
About the Speaker
Vega, an accomplished poet, storyteller, spoken word artist, and educator, will engage in a thought-provoking discussion on how poetry can be used to amplify voices, challenge perspectives, and create meaningful change.
Vega will share insights into the craft of poetry, offer practical writing tips, and encourage students to find their own poetic voices. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with one of San Antonio’s leading literary figures. Attendees will also enjoy a performance by John Jay High School's Ballet Folklorico.
Vega, who was recently appointed the 2024-2027 San Antonio Poet Laureate, will use his three-year term to champion literary and poetic arts and literacy throughout the Alamo City. He is currently an English teacher at Holy Cross of San Antonio. In addition, Vega has published two acclaimed poetry collections, Chicharra Chorus, and Somos Nopales, and edited the collection Asina Is How We Talk. His work has garnered recognition, including a Literary Arts Grant from the Luminaria Artist Foundation, and he was named “Best Local Poet” by the San Antonio Current in 2022. During the pandemic, Vega founded and continues to host the Mouth Dakota Poetry Project, a popular bi-weekly open mic event for poets of all skill levels.

Dr. Stacey R. Johnson has dedicated more than 40 years to higher education to empower students for success. She has served as interim vice president for Academic Success at Northwest Vista College and helped launch NVC’s first baccalaureate degree. Prior to NVC, she was a president at Valencia College in Florida. She has deep roots in San Antonio and worked at Palo Alto College in many leadership roles. An Olympian in fencing, she founded “Dreams for Youth” of the San Antonio Sports Foundation and was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame and the Institute for International Sport.
